What is the best way to get from SLC Airport to downtown?

Take the TRAX Green Line if your downtown destination is convenient to a station and trains are running when you arrive. The standard one-way fare is $2.50 per person. A taxi or rideshare makes more sense when the walk from the station would be difficult, your group has several bags, or you land late.

Our recommendation: look up your hotel’s exact address before choosing. A cheap train ride is less useful if it leaves you dragging luggage several blocks in bad weather. For a downtown-only trip, we would compare those two options before paying for a rental car and hotel parking.

How to take TRAX from SLC Airport to downtown

The airport has a direct light-rail connection; you do not need a shuttle to a remote train station. Follow the airport’s TRAX signs to the ground level, exit door 1A, and head east to the station outside the terminal. These are the airport’s published station directions; follow any temporary signage on the day.

Collect your bags before heading to the station.
Check the Green Line departure and your destination stop.
Buy or activate the appropriate ticket before boarding.
Keep your ticket available and leave aisles and doors clear of bags.
Check the final walking route to your hotel, not just the station name.

UTA identifies City Center Station as a downtown destination from the airport. Use your hotel’s address in the trip planner to decide where to get off. How much is the airport train?

UTA lists a $2.50 regular one-way fare and a $5 day pass for local services including TRAX. Tickets can be purchased at station vending machines or through the Transit app. Check UTA’s current fare rules for eligibility, payment options and passes.

For two adults paying the standard fare, a one-way train trip is $5 total; for four, it is $10. Compare that group total with one appropriately sized rideshare or taxi quote. That is a fairer comparison than putting a per-person rail fare next to a whole-vehicle price.

Is the airport train free?

No. Downtown’s Free Fare Zone does not make the airport trip free. Free travel applies when both boarding and exiting within the designated downtown zone. A journey from the airport requires a valid fare, even if you get off inside that zone. Check the official zone map and rules.

How long does the trip take?

Check the Green Line schedule for your particular downtown stop and departure. Your total journey also includes getting from the gate to baggage claim, reaching the platform, waiting for the train and walking from the station.

For an appointment or event, compare an arrival-at-destination transit itinerary with a live driving estimate. Neither the train’s running time nor a taxi’s driving time begins when your plane lands.

Uber, Lyft or taxi to downtown

The airport lists Uber and Lyft as licensed operators. Their designated pickup areas are on the ground-level B-Lane, marked by curbside signs. Use the meeting point shown in your app and request the ride when your party and luggage are ready.

For a taxi, SLC lists Yellow Cab of Utah as its only on-demand airport taxi provider, with 24/7 service. Confirm the destination fare before committing. See the airport’s ground transportation page for current provider details.

Compare the full total, including any fees, and confirm space for everyone and their luggage. Arriving late at night

TRAX is not a 24-hour airport service. Check the last departure for your travel date before relying on it, and leave room for a delayed flight or slow baggage delivery. A landing time before the last train does not guarantee you will reach the platform in time.

If the connection looks tight, budget for a taxi or rideshare. For a prebooked ride, ask how the operator handles flight delays. If you choose a hotel shuttle, confirm both its operating hours and how to request pickup; an advertised shuttle may not cover your arrival time.

Do you need a rental car for a downtown stay?

For a trip built around downtown meetings, restaurants and attractions, we would first price the airport train or a door-to-door ride. Ask the hotel about overnight parking before reserving a car that may sit unused.

Getting from downtown back to SLC Airport

Use the Green Line toward Airport, checking the destination display before boarding. Plan backward from when you need to be at the terminal, not from takeoff. Allow for the walk to your downtown station, waiting time, the train journey and the walk into the terminal.

For an early flight, check whether the first train gets you there with enough time for bag drop and security. If it does not, arrange a road transfer. Keep a backup option if a service alert disrupts your plan.
