Privacy policy

This site doesn't have accounts, forms, comments, or a newsletter, so there's relatively little to explain. Here's everything that touches your data and the choices you have.

What we don't collect

We don't ask you to sign up, log in, or submit anything. We don't set advertising cookies, and we don't build a profile of who's reading or track you across other sites.

Web analytics

This site uses Google Analytics 4 and Cloudflare Web Analytics to see aggregate information such as page views, traffic sources, general location, device and browser type, outbound link clicks, and how far readers scroll. We use this information to understand which travel guides are useful and what needs improvement—not to identify individual readers or follow them across other sites.

Google Analytics may set first-party measurement cookies and process device and usage information when you visit. We do not use Google Analytics advertising features, advertising storage, or ad personalization.

Google explains how it uses information from sites that use its services on its business data responsibility page. Cloudflare Web Analytics is cookie-free and reports aggregate traffic.

What our host sees

The site runs on Cloudflare Pages. Like any web host, Cloudflare processes standard technical information to serve you the page, things like your IP address and request details, as part of normal infrastructure logging. We don't have access to a per-visitor log of that data ourselves; it's handled under Cloudflare's own privacy policy.

Fonts

Page text is set in typefaces loaded from Google Fonts. Loading them means your browser makes a request to Google's servers, which can see the request's IP address the same way any server can. We don't get that data or use it for anything; it's between your browser and Google.

Google Preferred Sources

Guide pages include Google's Preferred Sources control so readers can choose to see this site's work highlighted in Google Search. The control is loaded from Google's servers, which means Google receives standard technical request information such as your IP address and browser details. Using the control opens a Google-managed preference flow and is governed by Google's privacy policy. We record an aggregate Analytics event when the control is clicked if you have allowed analytics; we do not receive your Google account information or confirmation of whether you completed the selection.

The live conditions board

The status strip on the homepage (weather, flight status, canyon roads, snow at Alta) is genuinely live. Two of those rows are fetched directly by your browser from public government sources, the National Weather Service and the USDA's snow-monitoring network, neither of which requires or receives anything from you beyond a standard request. The other two are fetched by our own server from the FAA and UDOT and relayed to you, so your browser never contacts those directly.

Affiliate links

This site makes money through affiliate links, covered in full on the disclosure page. When you click one and continue to a partner's site (currently Discover Cars and Trip.com), that company may set its own cookies to track that the visit came from here, so they can pay us if you book. What happens on their site is governed by their own privacy policy, not this one. We don't see anything about you as a result, only that a click happened.

Cookies

Google Analytics may set first-party measurement cookies on this site. Affiliate partners may set their own cookies after you follow a link to their site, as described above.

Children

This site isn't directed at children, and we don't knowingly collect personal information from anyone, of any age. We use the analytics described above to understand aggregate site use, not to identify individual visitors.

Changes to this policy

If what this site does with data ever changes, meaning we add a mailing list or another data-processing feature, this page will be updated and the date at the top will move.
