SLC Airport Visitor Pass: Meet Travelers at the Gate

Yes, Salt Lake City International Airport now has a real way for some people without airline tickets to go through security and meet travelers at the gate. It is called Gateside by TSA PreCheck, and SLC is one of 14 airports in the program’s initial launch.

The important correction to posts calling it a purchasable airport day pass: Gateside is free, but it is only available to TSA PreCheck members and other eligible people with Known Traveler Numbers (KTNs). It is not a ticket that anyone can buy at the airport.

SLC visitor pass: the short answer

This makes a gate greeting possible for a returning missionary, family member, friend or service member—as long as every visiting adult is eligible and approved. TSA describes meeting traveling family at the gate, joining someone during a long layover, and airport dining or shopping as valid uses. It does not name missionaries specifically, but that family-greeting use maps directly to the familiar SLC homecoming scenario.

One exception: a traveler arriving directly from another country may be routed from the aircraft into the customs area rather than back into the public concourse. Gateside does not grant access to U.S. Customs and Border Protection processing, so confirm the arrival flow before promising a gate greeting for a nonstop international flight.

How to apply for Gateside at SLC

1. Go to the official Gateside by TSA PreCheck page and select Apply.
2. Create or sign in to a Login.gov account.
3. Enter the personal information associated with the TSA PreCheck membership or KTN. The name, birth date and KTN must match the underlying record.
4. Select Salt Lake City International Airport and the intended visit date.
5. Submit the request, then check the portal dashboard for the decision.
6. If approved, bring an acceptable ID and be ready to show the live approval status in the portal.

Applications open three days before the visit and close one day beforehand. This is not a walk-up program. A correct application can still be denied when SLC has issued its available passes for that date, so apply as soon as the three-day window opens when the greeting date is important.

TSA says screenshots and printouts of the portal approval are not accepted when the officer needs to verify the live status, particularly when children are included. Log in before reaching the document checker rather than relying on weak airport reception at the last moment.

What happens at SLC security?

An approved visitor goes through the TSA PreCheck screening lane and follows the same security rules as a ticketed traveler. Carry-on restrictions still apply: a Gateside pass does not make a full water bottle, oversized liquids or a prohibited item acceptable.

Gateside visitors cannot use a TSA PreCheck Touchless ID lane. If the PreCheck lane is closed, a TSA officer may direct visitors to standard screening. The pass gives access to the secure terminal; it is not a boarding pass and does not include airline-lounge access.

The approval remains valid for the selected calendar day and permits re-entry. TSA also warns visitors to check the portal before going to the airport because an approval status can change.

Can an entire missionary family go to the gate?

Only eligible, approved visitors can pass the checkpoint. Each adult should expect to need their own qualifying KTN, application and approval. Children can be added to a parent or guardian’s registration with TSA’s Add visitor option.

That means Gateside can work well for a parent or smaller eligible family group, but it is not permission for an unlimited homecoming crowd. The daily airport cap also makes popular missionary-return dates a reason to apply as soon as the window opens.

After entering, check the live flight and gate in the airline app. SLC has two long concourses, so allow enough time to reach the assigned gate using the official SLC walking-time guidance.

Gateside versus an airline gate pass

These are separate programs.

Gateside by TSA PreCheck is administered through TSA. It covers broader personal visits, requires a qualifying KTN and advance approval, and normally uses a PreCheck lane.

A traditional airline gate pass is issued at an airline’s discretion in limited situations, such as accompanying an unaccompanied minor, a traveler with a disability or someone needing special assistance. SLC’s own FAQ says the airline typically issues only one such pass. Airline gate-pass holders use standard screening even if they personally have TSA PreCheck.

Someone who does not have a qualifying KTN cannot simply pay for Gateside. They can ask the airline whether their situation qualifies for a traditional gate pass or meet the arriving traveler in SLC’s landside Greeting Room.

Is the SLC Airport visitor pass free?
