SLC Airport to Moab, Arches & Canyonlands: The Complete Guide

Moab is the easiest of the Mighty 5 legs logistically: it’s a real town, with gas stations, restaurants, and lodging options the other parks on this list mostly don’t have nearby. Most visitors split time between Arches (a short drive from town) and Canyonlands (a bit farther, and split into districts worth understanding before you go).

The timed-entry question: what changed in February 2026

As of a February 18, 2026 announcement, Arches National Park no longer requires timed-entry reservations. That’s a real, current change worth knowing, since the reservation system had been in place every peak season since 2022, and a lot of what’s written online about visiting Arches still assumes it’s active. For 2026, vehicles can enter at any time during operating hours with no advance booking. You still need a valid entrance pass ($30 per vehicle, good for 7 days, buyable online via Recreation.gov or at the gate); that requirement hasn’t changed, only the reservation window.

One caveat worth carrying forward: dropping the reservation system doesn’t mean the park is empty. On weekends and holidays, expect real lines at the entrance and full parking lots at popular trailheads: staff can and do temporarily close access to specific overlooks or trailheads when their lots hit capacity, informally rather than through any booking system. Checked as of this page’s last update. Still worth a quick check on the park’s own site before you go, since a policy that changed once this year could change again.

Arches versus Canyonlands, for a first-time visitor

Canyonlands splits into districts that are not equally easy to reach. Island in the Sky is the one most visitors see: about 32 miles and 45 minutes from Moab via a fully paved scenic drive, with marquee overlooks like Mesa Arch and Grand View Point, and genuinely doable as a half-day trip. The Needles district is a different commitment entirely: about 76 miles and 1.5 hours each way, remote enough that most people don’t try to combine it with anything else in the same day. For a first visit with limited time, Island in the Sky plus Arches is the realistic combination; add Needles only if you have real extra time to give it, not as an afterthought.

Getting there

From SLC, the route is I-15 south to around Spanish Fork, then US-6 southeast, picking up US-191 south into Moab (roughly 230 miles, about 4 hours). Moab works well as a single base for both parks: Arches’ entrance is just a few miles north of town, and Island in the Sky is a manageable 45-minute drive, so most visitors don’t need to move lodging mid-trip unless they’re also making the longer trip out to the Needles district.
