SLC Airport Rental Car Companies: Counters, Hours & Pickup

SLC lists nine rental companies in the Gateway Center and eight off-airport agencies reached by shuttle. Here is where each group starts and which counters fit a late flight.

Salt Lake City International Airport divides rental-car pickup into two completely different paths. Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National, Payless, and Thrifty have counters in the Gateway Center beside the parking garage. ACE, Affordable, Easirent, Fox, Go Rentals, NU Car Rentals, Rugged Rental, and Sixt use off-airport locations with shuttle service.

That distinction matters more than the phrase “airport pickup” on a booking screen. One reservation begins with a walk across a bridge. The other begins with a walk through the garage area, a shuttle wait, and a ride to a separate facility.

On-airport companies and published hours

SLC publishes the following hours and contact numbers for the nine companies in the Gateway Center. Check again shortly before travel: the airport can update this directory, and a counter’s delayed-flight procedure may differ from its ordinary opening hours.

CompanySLC-published counter hoursPhone listed by SLC
Alamo7 a.m.–midnight844-942-0335
Avis5 a.m.–2 a.m.801-258-5237
Budget24 hours801-736-0890
Dollar7 a.m.–11 p.m.800-800-5252
Enterprise7 a.m.–midnight844-942-0337
Hertz7 a.m.–11 p.m.800-654-4173
National7 a.m.–midnight844-942-0336
Payless5 a.m.–2 a.m.801-258-5239
Thrifty7 a.m.–11 p.m.800-334-1705

Budget is the only company the airport currently labels open 24 hours. Avis and Payless publish the longest non-24-hour window, from 5 a.m. until 2 a.m. That does not automatically make any one company the best late-arrival choice. The reservation still needs a procedure for a delayed flight, and vehicle pickup can depend on staffing beyond the counter itself.

Before choosing a flight that arrives within an hour of closing, call the listed location and ask:

  • Does the counter monitor the flight number on the reservation?
  • How long is a confirmed vehicle held after the scheduled arrival?
  • Is there an after-hours pickup method, or does pickup move to morning?
  • If the flight diverts or cancels, can the reservation be moved without a new rate?

Save the answer with the confirmation. A general customer-service promise is less useful than the procedure used by the SLC location.

How to reach the Gateway Center counters

SLC’s baggage claim is on terminal level 2. The airport directs rental-car customers to the Gateway Center using two bridges in the baggage-claim area. The center is adjacent to the parking garage and contains the on-airport rental counters.

The practical route is:

  1. Collect all checked bags before leaving baggage claim.
  2. Follow signs for Rental Cars or the Gateway Center.
  3. Use either baggage-claim bridge toward the parking garage and Gateway.
  4. Go to the booked company’s counter rather than joining the first visible rental line.
  5. Follow that company’s instructions from the counter to the assigned car.

There is no shuttle needed for these nine counters. That is the main advantage of paying an on-airport rate: fewer handoffs between the aircraft and the car.

Travelers using a skip-the-counter or loyalty-lane benefit should still verify the location’s instructions. A national program feature may require a profile, eligible rate, completed license details, or a specific vehicle class before it works at pickup.

Off-airport companies with shuttle service

SLC’s official directory lists these eight companies as off airport. The airport does not publish their operating hours in the directory, so the phone number and the conditions attached to the actual reservation are essential.

Sixt Rent a Car385-360-5557Off-airport shuttle

The airport places the off-site rental-car shuttle pickup and drop-off area to the west of the parking garage. Follow the airport’s off-site rental shuttle signs; do not wait at a hotel, economy-parking, or general ground- transportation stop and assume the right van will arrive.

The pickup sequence is:

  1. Collect baggage and cross from the terminal toward the parking garage.
  2. Continue to the signed off-site rental-car shuttle area west of the garage.
  3. Confirm the arriving van displays the booked company’s name or the supplier named in the reservation.
  4. Ride to the separate rental facility and complete pickup there.

Some comparison sites show a booking brand and an operating supplier. If those names differ, the supplier’s shuttle instructions control the pickup. Save the voucher offline so the address and telephone number remain available if the airport Wi-Fi or mobile connection is weak.

Do not assume on-airport is always more expensive or off-airport is always cheaper. Compare the full total for the same dates, driver, vehicle, mileage, and cancellation policy. Then decide what the shuttle time and additional luggage transfer are worth for this trip. Use the cheapest SLC Airport rental-car guide to compare the real trip total rather than the displayed daily rate.

Which company fits a late arrival?

Start by removing every counter that closes before the scheduled arrival plus a reasonable delay margin. Then call the remaining location rather than inferring an after-hours policy from the published schedule.

A flight landing at 10:30 p.m. is not equivalent to reaching the counter at 10:30 p.m. Taxiing, walking from the gate, and baggage delivery happen first. An 11 p.m. counter cutoff can therefore be a poor match even when the flight is technically scheduled before closing.

For an off-airport company, both the counter and shuttle must be operating. “After-hours return” does not mean “after-hours pickup.” Ask about each direction separately.

Returns use the same location distinction

An on-airport reservation returns to the airport rental-car area. Follow Rental Car Return signs and the booked company’s lane rather than navigating only to the passenger terminal.

An off-airport reservation returns to that company’s facility, followed by a shuttle ride to SLC. Add time for refueling, inspection or key drop, unloading, the shuttle wait, traffic back to the airport, and airline check-in. The rental agreement—not the airport terminal address—is the authoritative return destination.

Before leaving at pickup, ask whether an early-morning return uses staffed lanes or a key box, when the rental stops accruing time, and how the final receipt is delivered. Photograph the fuel gauge, odometer, and vehicle at drop-off either way. The SLC Airport rental-car return guide explains the route, fuel plan, terminal transfer, and departure-day buffer.

Pickup checklist

  • Is the reservation with an on-airport company or an off-airport supplier?
  • Does the supplier name match the brand shown on the booking screen?
  • Are the counter and, if needed, shuttle open for the actual arrival?
  • What happens if checked baggage arrives after closing?
  • Is skip-the-counter service truly active for this reservation?
  • Where is the exact return facility?
  • What is the early or late return procedure?
  • Is the vehicle feature needed for the trip guaranteed or only “or similar”?

Once the location and hours work, compare the full rental terms in the SLC Airport rental-car pillar, including fees, deposits, insurance questions, inspection, and Utah winter equipment.
